Light is everything.
The 200-megapixel headline number tells you almost nothing about what a phone actually captures. Sensor size, lens speed, color science, and computational processing decide the photo — and they have to be measured, not declared. The Camera Benchmark scores 188 frames per phone across six calibrated lighting environments, then puts the results in front of three reviewers grading blind.

Every camera is tested across six calibrated lighting environments — bright daylight (50,000 lux), open shade (10,000 lux), indoor mixed (200 lux), low-light (10 lux), night (1 lux), and astrophotography conditions (sub-0.5 lux). Same lab panel, same script.
Forty-seven frame test panel.
The Imatest Master suite plus our custom panel — ColorChecker, resolution chart, motion-blur targets, geometric distortion grid, dynamic-range step wedge. 47 frames per lens, 188 frames per phone with the quad-camera systems. Three runs, median taken.
Editor-blind grading.
Half the score is objective — resolved detail, ΔE, dynamic range, noise floor, all measured by instruments. The other half is editorial — three reviewers grade frames blind, identifying images by number only. Discrepancies above 0.3 points are re-graded together.

Main camera
Sensor size and lens speed matter more here than any computational trick. The 1-inch-class sensors at the top of the chart have a structural advantage in dynamic range and low-light noise that processing can’t fully close.

Ultrawide
Most ultrawides are visibly worse than the main camera, but the gap is shrinking. Edge sharpness and consistent color science between lenses are the only things that separate top from middle here.

Telephoto · 10x and beyond
Past 10x, every phone leans on AI to fill in missing detail. We penalize obvious hallucination — invented foliage, fake lettering, fabricated textures — and reward phones that admit they don’t know what they’re looking at.

Low light. Hard scenes.
Two measurements separate top cameras from middle ones: noise behavior as light drops, and color consistency as the scene changes. Below, the top three phones charted across both. SNR is signal-to-noise in dB — higher is cleaner. ΔE is color accuracy in five scenes — lower is truer. Both curves are unedited.
